Empower your family to live a healthy, active lifestyle with this program developed by leading child-health and weight-management specialists, and designed for kids who:

  • Are 7-13 years old
  • Have a body mass index (BMI) in the 95th percentile or higher
  • Receive clearance from a healthcare provider or school nurse to participate in physical activity

Healthy Weight and Your Child is a program that includes 25 sessions for kids and a parent or guardian, over the course of four months. By participating in the program kids can:

  • Reduce BMI
  • Reduce waist circumference
  • Reduce sedentary behaviors
  • Increase physical activity
  • Improve self-esteem

A look inside the program

For the first 20 sessions, you and your child meet twice a week with a group, a leader focused on education and a leader focused on physical games and exercises. Here’s a look at each session:

  • 60 minutes of facilitated activities and group discussion for kids and adults
  • 30 minutes of breakout groups—kids will engage in physical activity and adults will participate in activities and group discussion
  • 30 minutes of physical activity for kids and adults

For the last 5 sessions, you and your child meet once a week with the group and leaders. These sessions include:

  • 15 minutes to collect height and weight measurements from kids and adults
  • 45 minutes of facilitated activities and group discussion for kids and adults
  • 60 minutes of physical activity for kids and adults

Involving the whole family

Children and adults engage in education and physical activity to work toward positive change in the Health Weight and Your Child program. Evidence shows that kids are more effective in weight management when the whole family is involved and committed to adopting healthier habits. This is why we require kids and adults to participate in the program.
