Kicking Off Maple Syrup Season

Maple syrup season is nearly here, and we are excited!

YMCA Camp Ihduhapi has hundreds of large, beautiful maple trees in 20 different varieties across its property. Many Ihduhapi staff are passionate about “maple syruping,” which is the process of collecting and processing the sap from the maple trees. We eagerly await this season every year, and it’s almost here!

…Maple trees= maple syrup… right?

Well, it’s not quite that simple.

  • How do you know which trees to tap?
  • How do you know when they are ready?
  • What does it mean to “tap” a tree?
  • And what do you mean the stuff coming out of the tree isn’t ready to pour over pancakes?
  • How does the clear liquid flowing out of the tree turn into delicious syrupy goodness?!

Whoa, whoa, whoa, slow down. Ihduhapi has got the answers to all of those questions (and many more).

Sunday, March 8, from 1-4 p.m., we kick off the season with Maple Syrup Immersion.

We are also still looking for volunteers for the day. If you are interested in helping, sign up here.

Here is a teaser on what you will be learning to become a maple tree and maple syrup expert!
