Greetings, Camp Community. The smell of spring and warm winds bring me right back to Half Moon Lake, these past few weeks I've been transported often. As many of you know 2019 was my last summer as Camp Director. When the season came to a close, I could not have been more connected with the campers, more proud of the staff, or in love with the land - I knew that camp was in good hands. It was time to move on.
Summer 2019 was excellent, and by all indications 2020 will be as well. If you haven't heard, the new Camp Director, Laura Villano, loves Camp Warren. A camper, staff member, community member, and board member, she understands what makes this place special and will work tirelessly to carry us forward in this new decade. We are lucky to have her serve in this role. If you haven't yet, please reach out and say hello!
Last fall I started a new journey, following my long hatched plans to pursue Software Development (long hatched like since I was 10 years old.) So, I attended an accelerated learning program to improve my skills, and have entered the professional world. Often I get the remark: Whoah! That's a change! But I assure you that in my experience, there is more shared than separates the camp staff from computer programmers. We plan out our work so others can engage in it and know what we're working on, we honor tradition while still striving to solve problems in new ways, there are a ton of small, undocumented things you can learn/master/teach to do daily work, and in the end it is hard work done alone or in small groups towards a much greater goal. This was something I was able to walk right into and feel comfortable.
I look forward to each social media post/ Back-Bay Journal/ Newsenpopple that lets me know what is going on at Camp Warren. Now I'll be volunteering at work weekends, donating to the annual scholarship fund, and registering for Family Camps. I hope to see you all there.
Hello, Camp Warren!
I am so excited to be here and officially introduce myself to you. My name is Laura Villano and as Dave mentioned above, I've worn many hats in the Camp Warren community - camper, staff member, board member and now executive director. It is truly an honor to serve our community in this role. My experience as a camper taught me how to be self-reliant, open-minded, and what it means to be a good friend. As a staff member, I learned how to be a servant leader and a steward of the wilderness. My time on the community board solidified how important it is to give your time to a community that gave so much to you.
Camp Warren has had truly amazing leadership over the last 20 years in the executive director and program director roles. I am grateful for their service, wisdom, and the commitment to each one of you. I hold their work in the highest regard. I am here to uphold over 90 years of tradition, while continuing to evolve our programming to meet the needs of the community we serve. And this is when I turn this letter into a thank you note. Thank you for your continued support of Camp Warren. Thank you for believing in the camp experience and helping us get more campers to camp each summer and ensuring our programming is of the highest standard. We wouldn't be here today without you.
I would love to hear from you - hear your Camp Warren story. And if you find yourself near Half Moon Lake, we would love for you to stop by.
Looking forward to connecting with you in the near future.
