Greetings, Camp Community. The smell of spring and warm winds bring me right back to Half Moon Lake, these past few weeks I've been transported often. As many of you know 2019 was my last summer as Camp Director. When the season came to a close, I could not have been more connected with the campers, more proud of the staff, or in love with the land - I knew that camp was in good hands. It was time to move on.
Summer 2019 was excellent, and by all indications 2020 will be as well. If you haven't heard, the new Camp Director, Laura Villano, loves Camp Warren. A camper, staff member, community member, and board member, she understands what makes this place special and will work tirelessly to carry us forward in this new decade. We are lucky to have her serve in this role. If you haven't yet, please reach out and say hello!
Last fall I started a new journey, following my long hatched plans to pursue Software Development (long hatched like since I was 10 years old.) So, I attended an accelerated learning program to improve my skills, and have entered the professional world. Often I get the remark: Whoah! That's a change! But I assure you that in my experience, there is more shared than separates the camp staff from computer programmers. We plan out our work so others can engage in it and know what we're working on, we honor tradition while still striving to solve problems in new ways, there are a ton of small, undocumented things you can learn/master/teach to do daily work, and in the end it is hard work done alone or in small groups towards a much greater goal. This was something I was able to walk right into and feel comfortable.
I look forward to each social media post/ Back-Bay Journal/ Newsenpopple that lets me know what is going on at Camp Warren. Now I'll be volunteering at work weekends, donating to the annual scholarship fund, and registering for Family Camps. I hope to see you all there.
