The UHG Equity Innovation Center of Excellence uses the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI®) Assessment tool as a way of bringing self-awareness to the forefront of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging efforts in an organization. It is a tool that highlights mental models and culture. It provides an opportunity for an individual to reflect on how they personally interact with cultural differences, how individuals contribute and/or are shaped by organizational culture, and how systems are shaped by cultural practices.

The Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI®) is the premier cross-cultural assessment of intercultural competence used by thousands of individuals and organizations to build intercultural competence to achieve international and domestic diversity and inclusion goals and outcomes. IDI® research in organizations and educational institutions confirms two central findings when using it:

  • Interculturally competent behavior occurs at a level supported by the individual’s or group’s underlying development orientation as assessed by the IDI®.
  • Training and leadership development efforts at building intercultural competence are more successful when based on the individual’s or group’s underlying developmental orientation as assessed by the IDI®.

The group roll-up results also provide the opportunity for an organization to be reflective in how the organizational culture is interacting with cultural differences and be intentional about shifting mental models to be more inclusive in its systems, policies, practices, and resource development.

It is not about what is good vs bad, right vs wrong; but rather supporting people in their journey to understand how personal lived experiences contribute to how they interact with cultural commonalities and differences. The best part is that each person receives a roadmap for their personal journey to grow in their cultural agility through a 1:1 conversation about their personal results.

All individual results are confidential and are only shared with the person taking the assessment during a 1:1 session with one of our team. Group results will be shared in a roll-up summary only.

IDI journey

Our Process

Our team will collaborate with you to establish dates, answer questions, and facilitate the process.

Beginning the Journey

  • An opening 60-90 minute session to level set a foundation of understanding for key terms, introduce the IDI® to your team, and communicate the process

Take the IDI® Assessment online

  • Dates TBD by client but typically allow 10 days – 2 weeks to take the assessment depending on the size of the group. The assessment takes about 20 minutes to complete.
  • Assessment codes are typically sent out within 24 hours after Beginning the Journey.

Cultural Agility – Understanding Your Group Results

  • A two-hour session that engages the group in conversation on mental models, culture, and understanding the IDI® Continuum with the IDI® group results.
  • Recommended to schedule within a month of the deadline for taking the IDI®  Assessment.

1:1 Individual Conversations

  • Each person who took the IDI® is invited to have a confidential 1:1 conversation with a certified Qualified Administrator (QA) at a time convenient for them. This the only way for an individual to receive their personal results and development plan.
  • We encourage individuals to complete this step within a month of Cultural Agility – Understanding Your Group Results.

Opportunities

The IDI® assessment is recommended as part of both Leading with Excellence and Equity learning series Personal Transformation and Organizational Transformation. The assessment only needs to be taken once if teams are participating in both experiences. The group results will be shared and explored in both opportunities and will be connected throughout the learning experiences.
