Summer Programs

Learning shouldn’t stop for the summer, especially when it’s this fun.

Vacation from school shouldn’t be a vacation from learning. Studies indicate that, without new learning opportunities, the average student will lose one to three months of academic development each summer. Young bodies and minds continue to grow during this time, so why not feed them?

At the Harold Mezile North Community YMCA Youth & Teen Enrichment Center, we offer a cost-effective tool to combat learning loss: compassionate team members committed to providing a safe space for kids to learn and grow.

Over the last two summers, we’ve offered Freedom School, a curriculum honoring the Freedom Summer of 1967 that focuses on literacy, civil rights and building healthy relationships. This nationally recognized model kicks off each morning with a Harambee (Swahili for “come together”) celebration and a Read-Aloud component that brings in community leaders as guest readers.

It’s often hard to tell who’s having more fun—the kids or guests. But then, nothing says “good morning” like a gym full of kids chanting and singing!
