Fun family climbing event on May 19

Reach your personal peak at ForEverest at Hyland Hills Ski Area in Bloomington.

The YMCA is teaming up with CycleHealth to offer this first-ever family climbing event on May 19, where you can get a taste of what it’s like to climb Mt. Everest.

A special course at Hyland Hills Ski Area will have you hiking and participating in wellbeing experiences on your journey toward the summit.

Plus, be prepared to conquer special Everest-like elements featured throughout your hike. It might be like the experience of carrying a pack or navigating an ice shelf.

Here’s what you need to know about the event:

Almost all ages are welcome.

Ages 7 and up are invited to climb the hills and head toward the summit.

No mountain or rock-climbing experience is needed.

At ForEverest, you don’t need any special skills—other than the ability to walk up and down hills.

There are two start times.

If you sign up for the noon wave, plan to arrive after 11:30am. If you sign up for the 2:30pm wave, plan on arriving after 2pm.

With four course options to choose from there is a path for everyone.

You will choose your course level when you arrive at the event. A good guideline is to consider the duration you might be comfortable walking/hiking up and going down hills at a pace you choose.

Depending on how much of a personal challenge you seek, use our estimated completion times for each course to make your decision:

  • Blue – Level 1: 40-60 minutes
  • Green – Level 2: 60-90 minutes
  • Yellow – Level 3: 80-120 minutes
  • Red – Ultra: 100-150 minutes

There isn’t much that you need to bring.

No special equipment is needed, although if you have trekking poles, you’re welcome to use them at the event.

Be sure to wear weather-appropriate clothing that you feel comfortable working out in. Hiking books are encouraged, but sneakers will work great, too.

This is a zero-waste event, so be sure to bring a reusable water bottle that you can fill onsite to stay hydrated throughout the climb.

You get all kinds of goodies as a participant.

  • Custom swag
