YMCA Offers Training Program to Make Health Coaching More Accessible to All

Selected participants will receive full tuition and paid support to pursue national board certification

YMCA of the North is now accepting applications for its 2025 Health Coach Training & Development Program—an initiative designed to make the field of health and wellness coaching more inclusive, representative, and accessible. The program will support seven individuals from multicultural backgrounds as they work toward becoming National Board-Certified Health & Wellness Coaches (NBC-HWCs).

Funded by Penny and Bill George and The George Family Foundation, this initiative is part of the Y’s broader effort to remove barriers and build a broader pipeline of professionals in the health coaching field.

Each participant selected will receive:

  • Full tuition for a virtual, 20-week NBHWC-approved health coach training program
  • Compensation for time spent in class and on coursework
  • Compensation for 50 post-training coaching sessions required for certification eligibility

"Health coaching is a growing field with enormous potential to support individual and community wellbeing," said Tim Klein, Program Executive for Health Coaching and Nutrition at the YMCA of the North. "This program is about ensuring that more people can see themselves in that future—and have the resources they need to get there."

To be eligible, applicants must be 18 or older, identify as multicultural (by race, ethnicity, culture, national origin, first language, or LGBTQ+ identity), and have either an associate degree, 60 college credits, or 4,000 hours of work experience in any field.

"We’re looking for people who are passionate about helping others and ready to grow into a professional role in health and wellness," Klein added. "This program is about equipping individuals to make a meaningful impact in their communities."
