Swim lessons are available for all ages and experience levels at the Emma B. Howe YMCA. Swimmers can enjoy exercise and recreation in our lap pool, zero-depth entry leisure pool, whirlpool, and water slide. We offer these types of swim lessons in Coon Rapids:
- Group Swim Lessons: Several levels of swim lessons are available to help swimmers develop their confidence and skill.
- Swim Safety Lessons: Infants, toddlers, and children can learn how to be safe around water.
- Aquatics Specialty Classes: Competitive swim prep and other specialty classes are available for youth and adult swimmers.
- Private & Buddy Swim Lessons: Customized one-on-one swimming lessons can help swimmers learn more quickly.
Coon Rapids Water Aerobics & Fitness Classes
Group water exercise classes at the Emma B. Howe YMCA provide a great way to keep healthy and active. Get your heart pumping with Aqua Zumba or Deep Water Power, and then recover in our whirlpool and sauna. With wheelchair-accessible restrooms and entrances and a zero-depth entry pool, our aquatics center is a welcoming space for all in our community.

Emma B. Howe YMCA Aquatic Center Highlights
- Leisure Pool: This indoor zero-depth entry pool has warm water no deeper than 3' 6".
- Lap Pool: Our 6-lane, 25-yard indoor lap pool is perfect for water fitness.
- Recovery: After a swim or a workout session, you can unwind in our sauna and whirlpool.
- Accessibility: Our aquatic center is fully ADA-compliant, including its restrooms and entrances.
Swim Starters
In this program, infants and toddlers learn to be comfortable in the water and develop swim-readiness skills through fun and confidence-building experiences. Parents learn about water safety, drowning prevention and the importance of supervision.
Swim Basics
In this program, preschoolers, school-age kids, teens and adults learn personal water safety and achieve basic swimming competency by learning two benchmark skills—swim, float, swim and jump, push, turn, grab.
Swim Strokes
Having mastered the fundamentals, preschoolers, school-age kids, teens and adults learn additional water safety skills and build stroke technique.

The student isn’t three years old yet.

The student is three to five years old.
Register for Preschool
The student is at least five years old, and isn’t yet able to swim 10-15 yards on their front and back.

The student is at least five years old, and is able to swim 10-15 yards on their front and back.

Customized Private and Buddy Swim Lessons
Customized 30-minute swimming lessons can be scheduled one-on-one, with a buddy or sibling and are a great option for swimmers looking to catch up or get ahead. Available in one-, three- or seven-lesson packages and can begin at any time. Contact an Aquatics Manager to schedule.

This competitive program offers children and teens ages five to 18 years an opportunity to work with trained coaches to improve swimming skills, endurance and promote a healthy lifestyle.

Group Exercise classes in the pool
Beyond swimming, the Y offers several water exercise classes that are free for YMCA members.
Open and lap swim
Lap swim is a scheduled time when you can use the pool to swim or walk the pool in a continuous pattern—sometimes in designated lanes that might be shared with others. During lap swim, regular safety breaks are scheduled.
Open swim is a designated time when the pool, or a section of the pool can be used for recreational swimming or family time.
