Overview of age guidelines

All ages are welcome at the Y. To ensure that everyone has a safe and enjoyable time at the Y, there are guidelines for activities kids and teens can participate in—with or without parents or guardians.

  • Must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times while at the YMCA, including youth enrolled in sports or aquatic programming.
  • Must be accompanied by an adult in the water, unless they are able to pass an appropriate swim test—if they pass the swim test, a parent doesn’t need to be in the water, but does need to remain in the pool area
  • Kids age 6 and under are not allowed in the fitness center at any time
  • Kids age 5 and up can be in the pool in a lifejacket without a parent or guardian in the water
  • Must be supervised by a parent or guardian (16 and up) that is in the building, but does not have to remain in the same area—except for the indoor track and fitness center, where a parent must accompany, and in the water, unless they are able to pass an appropriate swim test or wear a lifejacket
  • Youth between the ages of 7-9 that are enrolled in sports or aquatic programming it is recommended that a parent or guardian (age 16 or older) remain onsite.
  • Have access to stretching areas* and cardio equipment (excluding treadmills/stepmills) following completion of orientation and under direct supervision (within arm’s reach) of a parent or guardian.
    • Strength machines and free weights are not available to youth ages 7-9
    • Stretching area equipment examples include light 2-5 lbs. weights, bands, tubes, BOSU’s, mats, foam rollers, etc.
