Overview of age guidelines
All ages are welcome at the Y. To ensure that everyone has a safe and enjoyable time at the Y, there are guidelines for activities youth and teens can participate in.
- Must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times while at the YMCA, including youth enrolled in sports or aquatic programming.
- Must be accompanied by an adult in the water, unless youth are able to pass an appropriate swim test—if they pass the swim test, a parent doesn’t need to be in the water, but does need to remain in the pool area
- Youth age 6 and under are not allowed in the fitness center at any time
- Youth age 5 and up can be in the pool in a lifejacket without a parent or guardian in the water
- Must be supervised by a parent or guardian (16 and up) that is in the building. Adult does not have to remain in the same area—except for the indoor track and fitness center, where a parent must accompany, and in the water, unless youth are able to pass an appropriate swim test or wear a lifejacket
- It is recommended that a parent or guardian (age 16 or older) remain onsite when youth are enrolled in sports or aquatic programming.
- Have access to stretching areas* and cardio equipment (excluding treadmills/stepmills) under direct supervision (within arm’s reach) of a parent or guardian. Completion of orientation (available virtually and in person) is strongly encouraged.
- Strength training areas of the fitness center including strength machines and free weights are not available to youth ages 7-9
- *Stretching area equipment examples include light 2-5 lbs. weights, bands, tubes, BOSU’s, mats, foam rollers, etc.
- Must be accompanied by a parent or guardian to attend an adult Group Exercise class
- Have full access to the fitness center. Completion of orientation (available virtually and in person) is strongly encouraged.
- May book personal and group training sessions with the consent of a parent or guardian, who must also be present at the time of booking and for the session (including completion of paperwork)
- Have full access to the fitness center and are strongly encouraged to complete orientation
