The purpose of the instructor course is to train instructor candidates to teach the Red Cross Lifeguarding, Shallow Water Lifeguarding, Waterfront Skills, Waterpark Skills, CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers, and Bloodborne Pathogens Training: Preventing Disease Transmission courses and/or modules.

Instructor candidates will also become familiar with Junior Lifeguarding, Lifeguard Management, Safety Training for Swim Coaches, and BasicWater Rescue. Instructor Certifications are valid for 2 years.

Attendance at all class sessions is mandatory.

Prerequisites

  • Candidates must have a current American Red Cross certificate for Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED
  • Must be at least 17 years of age by the end of the course
  • Successfully complete the pre-course session

The purpose of the instructor review course is to recertify American Red Cross Instructors to teach the Red Cross Lifeguarding curriculum.  This in-person Instructor review course is the required course for all Lifeguarding Instructors to re-certify. During this course, Lifeguarding Instructors and Instructor Trainers will participate in an in-water practice and polish skills session in addition to a classroom-based review of Red Cross administrative policies and procedures. 

Lifeguarding Instructors/Instructor Trainers may also choose to attend a brief "test out" session following this course to gain a basic-level Lifeguarding certification. ***Registration for the Test Out session must be completed separately.

Prerequisites

  • Participants must have a current American Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructor/Instructor Trainer Certificate OR have a certification that has expired within no more than 1 Year.

This course allows lifeguard instructor/instructor trainers who are renewing their certification to “test out” of their basic-level lifeguarding skills to achieve certification in Lifeguarding, CPR for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid.  Certifications are valid for 2 years.

Prerequisites

  • Participants must be enrolled in the Lifeguard Instructor/Instructor Trainer Review course running on the same day as the test out session.
